I Take A Contrarian Approach To Web Marketing – So Beware!

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

I was (now retired) and continue to think like a professional consultative salesperson. I truly feel that the most important factor in keeping you in business and making you successful is profitable sales.Cyrano de Bergerac Therefore my only goal is to help increase your sales results, not mine. On the WEB this translates into qualified prospects visiting your WEB site and converting to clients or customers.

As before, I confess that I am not the King of Charm. In fact I am the antithesis.  I also confess, I am almost totally left brained so if the following alienates you, perhaps we will never be able to effectively communicate nor collaborate. …Continue Reading

Add Skills To Your LinkedIn Profile Under The New Guidelines

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Here is my new video about Adding Skills To Your LinkedIn Profile and Editing followed by the transcript.

Today I am going to be talking about my favorite subject LinkedIn and the topic
will be adding skills to your LinkedIn profile.

Why is adding skills so important? On February 24th, 2012 LinkedIn said it is and
it was putting more emphasis on skills and expertise. Why? You just (have) not
been doing your job adding these keywords to your profiles. Either in the
headline, your job titles and descriptions, summary and specialty areas as well as
sections and applications. So LinkedIn said, in order to make the job of
recruiters and head hunters and people looking for you and your skills easier, we
are going to give a specific area to hone in on and that is the skills section.

Skills have been around for quite a while and are found under the < More > pull
down under your < Edit Profile > screen. Even though it says ‘Beta’ I have been
talking about Skills probably now for well over a year now. So it has been in
‘Beta’ quite a while.

To start just click on the < Skills > section and this window is going to open up.
Start typing a keyword to reveal your choices and when you find one that suits
you, add it to your profile.

There is a wealth of information and resources revealed behind what LinkedIn
calls it’s Skills and Expertise section of your profile. Shown in Headline is the title
of this particular skill. Then an indicator of whether this is a growing field or not.
I would recommend you review the description to make sure that it suits your
expertise.

Here in this case, you notice that the Google Webmaster Tools is already part of
my profile; and this button (See Suggested Skills) will lead you to other related
skills. Other ‘Related Skills’ are also shown on this left side bar. Going back to
the suggested related skills underneath the description you get another type of
listing here as well.

Moving to the right, at the top you are also going to see an expanded relative
growth chart. In the center column you will see other professionals using the
same skills set in their profile. Moving to the right you will see companies related
to this skill set. Next you going to see potential jobs available through this skill
set, then groups using these keywords, as well related geographical locations.

Next I am going to click on the Site Map link in the description under Google
Webmaster Tools. Here the definition of Site Map is a list of pages of a website
for crawlers or users to use which is really not what I am looking for and not quite
the same as XML Site Map. Whereas a XML Site Map is really for robots or
crawlers. This is more of what I am looking for.

I can add the skill by checking the blue box but for demonstration purposes I am
going to go return to my < Edit Profile > window. I’ll scroll down to the skills
section again type in the keystrokes ‘XML Site…’ until it is populated and
< Add > the skill there. Once the skill is added I’m taken by to my edit profile
Window. Why you ask? Well scroll down to skills again so I can < Edit > this
new skill. I can add proficiency levels as well as years of experience. (Save
Changes.)

One additional thing that I want to point out to you is that you can drag and drop
these skills to put them into whichever order you so desire.

Thank you….

Brian Clark of Copyblogger has these 22 suggestions for generating copy for your blog, and as far as I am concerned, business blog as well.

Remember the purpose of a business blog is to post new, relevant content to your Web site regularly to attract search engines. This raises your visibility and credibility and says you are relevant. You do not have to write a diary. Therefore, why be challenged with authoring your own content, day after day? It is totally unnecessary. …Continue Reading

Gary Vaynerchuk Rants About Using Social Media Platforms

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Gary Vaynerchuk has been missing off my radar as of late. He launches 2012 with a trilogy of new videos. On this first he takes the Ophray Winfrey Network to task for using Twitter to stuff a message down peoples’ throats by using the traditional push marketing philosophy. Rather platforms such as Twitter are to be used to start two way relationships with consumers.

On this second video Gary says there is no such thing as ‘social media’. …Continue Reading

Reasons You Are Not Getting The Results You Want On LinkedIn

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

An article authored by Dan Schawbel was published on Forbes.com titled “Why Most LinkedIn Users Don’t Get Results” New Year’s eve day. He interviewed Jan Vermeiren, networking coach and author of a results oriented book on LinkedIn. He points out a shift in inquiries about LinkedIn from individuals to sales and recruiters as well as CEO’s. I think this is because of the publicity and notoriety LinkedIn has caused. Firstly because business people are starting to see results and are talking those results up and secondly with what has happened since the IPO.

LinkedIn for Growing Your Business

I know first hand the results to be gained with the number of new clients I gained as well as the many, many contacts I made through LinkedIn. Even my wife has learned to expand her business to consumer party business, A-BnC Parties, through LinkedIn groups. And, I have not been keeping this a guarded secret as many do, I have been shouting it out. Most of this blog is dedicated to LinkedIn and other social media sites. I teach classes for small business people and job seekers at libraries and for various job placement agencies. …Continue Reading
